Why replacement is almost always unnecessary

Why shower glass spots become permanent.

Hard water in Minnesota carries dissolved minerals (calcium, magnesium). Every time water dries on the glass, those minerals are left behind as deposits. Over time the deposits etch into the glass surface, creating a permanent rough texture that traps soap scum and looks foggy. Once the etching is set, regular cleaning won't remove it; professional restoration is needed.

Replacement is rarely necessary. The exception is glass that's been chemically damaged by aggressive acid cleaners; in those cases, replacement may be the right call, and we'll tell you that at the in-home assessment.

How we install your glass restoration, step by step.

Same approach every project. The hydrophobic sealer is what separates a cleaning from a real restoration.

    In-home assessment and written quote

    Visit, assess the glass surfaces, determine how deeply the mineral deposits have set, and write a fixed quote on the right scope. Most assessments take 15 to 20 minutes.

    Mask and prepare the area

    Bathroom or window area protected against splash from the cleaning solution. Drains covered, fixtures masked, surrounding tile or trim protected.
  3. 3

    Mineral deposit removal

    Specialized cleaning solution worked into the glass to dissolve and lift mineral deposits. Multiple passes for heavy buildup. This step alone restores most glass that's been neglected for under 5 years.

    Surface polishing and scratch removal (if needed)

    If the deposits have etched into the glass, mechanical polishing removes the etched layer. Physical scratches from past attempts to scrub with abrasive pads can also be safely polished out, even scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail. Not every project needs this step; we determine at the assessment whether polishing or scratch removal is required.

    Hydrophobic sealer application

    Hydrophobic sealer worked into the cleaned glass surface. The sealer bonds with the glass and makes water sheet off instead of beading and drying as spots. This is the step that makes the restoration last.

    Walk-through and care guide

    Final walk-through on the restored glass. Care guide: how to maintain the sealer (gentle squeegee after showers, mild cleaners only, never acidic). With basic maintenance, the sealer holds 2 to 4 years.

Common Questions

Common questions about glass restoration.

Will the glass really stop spotting after restoration?
Yes, dramatically. Hydrophobic sealer causes water to sheet off the glass instead of beading and drying. With a quick squeegee after each shower, the glass stays clear for years. Without the sealer, mineral spots return within months in Minnesota water.
How long does the sealer last?
Typically 2 to 4 years on shower glass, longer on less-used windows. Reapplication (the Periodic Maintenance scope) keeps the protection going indefinitely.
What about already-replaced shower glass that's spotting again?
Same fix. New glass spots just as fast as old glass without a sealer. Restoration plus the hydrophobic sealer is the right path. Replacement is rarely the answer.
Can you restore frosted or textured glass?
Frosted and textured glass takes more care because the texture itself traps deposits. Restoration is possible but the result varies by the texture pattern. We assess at the in-home visit and tell you what to expect.
Can you remove scratches from glass?
Yes, and we were the first shop in the Twin Cities to offer professional glass scratch removal. Scratches caused by abrasive pads, razor blades, or hard-water residue cleaning attempts can be safely polished back to optical clarity, including scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail. The technique requires the right equipment and trained hands, which is why most cleaning services and even some restoration shops still tell homeowners scratched glass has to be replaced. We assess each piece at the in-home visit and tell you honestly which scratches can be removed and which cannot.
How do I clean the glass after restoration?
Squeegee after each shower, mild non-acidic cleaner once a week, microfiber for spots. Avoid: vinegar, ammonia-based glass cleaners, anything acidic. The care guide covers this in detail.
Do you restore windows?
Yes. Window restoration is the same process: mineral removal, polishing if etched, hydrophobic sealing. Most common for sun-facing windows that have built up hard-water spots from sprinklers or weather.
What about glass shower doors with metal frames?
The glass restoration is straightforward. The metal frame and tracks also tend to build up deposits; we can clean those at the same visit as part of the scope.
How long does a typical project take?
Single shower panel: 1 to 2 hours. Full shower enclosure: 2 to 4 hours. Window sets scale with the count. Same-day in nearly every case.
