A pool deck has three jobs a normal patio doesn't: stay grippy when wet, tolerate chlorine and saltwater, and stay cool enough to walk on barefoot in July. We use UV-stable polyaspartic topcoats with added aggregate for grip, sized to the deck and the bather load. Walkable in 24 hours, swimmable in 48.

What we install

Two pool deck systems. The Ultimate tier handles most installs; Apex is for older or compromised slabs.

Pool decks need grip, color stability, and chemical tolerance that a normal patio coating doesn't. The systems we use here are spec'd for that environment, including the topcoat aggregate that gives bare feet traction on wet concrete.

Why pool decks need their own coating spec

What makes a pool deck coating different from a patio coating.

Three things: slip resistance, heat reflectivity, and chemical exposure. A pool deck coating without all three is a patio coating in the wrong context. Aggregate in the topcoat handles grip. Light color reflects heat for barefoot comfort. UV-stable, chlorine-tolerant chemistry handles the chemical side. We don't shortcut any of the three.

Pool deck installs schedule around the pool-open season. We can install over the spring opening window or in fall after closing; both work better than mid-summer for cure conditions.

How we install your pool deck coating, step by step.

Pool deck prep is more involved than a normal patio because of the water exposure history. Same checklist, scaled to the conditions.

    On-site assessment + written quote

    Visit, measure the deck, evaluate existing condition including any chlorine-exposure damage, write a fixed quote.
  2. 2

    Cover the pool + protect surrounding plantings

    Pool surface covered to keep prep dust and coating material out. Plantings and any features near the deck masked or covered.
  3. 3

    Diamond-ground prep + crack repair

    Full surface prep, crack filling, edge repair near the pool waterline if needed.
  4. 4

    Basecoat application

    Polyurea or flexible urethane basecoat depending on tier, rolled and back-rolled.

    Decorative flake + aggregate topcoat

    Decorative flake broadcast into wet basecoat. After cure, scraped flat. Polyaspartic topcoat with grip aggregate broadcast in for slip resistance.

    Walk-through + cure

    Final walk-through. Walkable in 24 hours, fully cured for swim use in 48.

Common Questions

Common questions about pool deck coating.

Will it actually be slip resistant when wet?
Yes. The polyaspartic topcoat is broadcast with grip aggregate (fine silica or polymer beads, depending on the texture level you want) that gives bare feet traction on a wet surface. Aggressive enough for safety, fine enough not to be uncomfortable.
Will it get hot in the sun?
Light color choices reflect significantly more heat than dark ones. We recommend lighter flake blends for pool decks specifically for this reason. Not as cool as some specialty acrylic pool deck coatings, but far cooler than dark stained concrete.
Does chlorine damage the coating?
Polyaspartic is chlorine tolerant at normal pool concentrations. Saltwater pool systems are also fine. Heavy chemical spills (concentrated shock, muriatic acid) should still be rinsed off promptly, same as you would for any finished surface.
What about the pool coping or waterline edge?
We coat the horizontal deck surface. The vertical pool coping (stone or concrete cap at the waterline) is a separate decision; we can talk through whether to include it during the estimate.
Can I coat a concrete deck with a stamped pattern?
Film coatings cover stamped patterns. If you want to keep the decorative pattern, the Essential sealer (also offered) preserves the look while adding chlorine and freeze-thaw protection.
How long does the install take?
Most residential pool decks are 1 to 2 days on site. Larger or premium decks take longer. We coordinate around the pool-use season; spring or fall installs are easier than mid-summer.
When can I open the pool after the install?
48 hours for walk and swim use. Full coating cure continues for a week beyond that, but the surface is functionally ready at 48.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes. Written limited warranty, terms vary by tier, walked through during the estimate.
