Why marble etching is fixable in Woodland
Why marble etches (and why etching is reversible).
Marble is calcium carbonate, which reacts chemically with even mild acids. A glass of red wine, lemon juice, or vinegar left on the surface causes a chemical reaction that dulls the top layer. The damage is real but it's only on the surface; the marble underneath is unchanged. Progressive polishing lifts the etched layer and exposes the unaffected stone underneath. Our driveway and patio stain badly under the trees. Will a coating help?
It is probably the most visible thing a coating does on a lot like yours. Tannin and sap from a dense canopy soak into bare concrete and discolor it permanently, which is why cleaning stops working after a few seasons. Does being near Wayzata Bay affect the lower level?
It affects which system, which is why the moisture reading comes before the quote. Lots closer to the bay sit nearer groundwater and their slabs push more vapor; a film coating over a slab like that lifts off over time. High readings get a penetrating sealer that seals while letting the slab breathe. Higher wooded ground away from the water usually tests normal.
Can you remove etching from marble?
Yes. Etching is a chemical reaction that damages the top layer of marble. Progressive polishing physically lifts that layer and exposes the unaffected stone underneath. The marble comes back to its original finish.
Can you change my polished marble to a honed finish (or vice versa)?
Yes. Because the restoration physically resurfaces the stone with diamond abrasives, the sheen is set by which grit we stop on. Polished to matte/honed is a common ask on kitchen islands where the homeowner is tired of every fingerprint and etch reading on a high-gloss surface. We confirm the target finish at the in-home assessment.
How do I avoid etching after restoration?
Three rules: no acidic cleaners (vinegar, bathroom sprays, glass cleaners). Wipe spills quickly (wine, juice, anything acidic). Use coasters under glasses. We walk through care guidelines at the final walk-through.
How often should marble be resealed?
More often than granite. Most marble counters benefit from a fresh sealer every 1 to 2 years; bathroom marble closer to 6 to 12 months in heavy-use bathrooms. We recommend a maintenance cadence at the end of any restoration.
Will white marble look as white after restoration?
Yes. Restoration brings the marble back to its original color and finish. If the marble was discolored from old sealer residue, restoration actually makes it brighter than before, not duller.
Can you match the existing finish style?
Yes. Polished, honed, and matte finishes can all be matched. We discuss the target finish at the in-home assessment and confirm it during the polishing pass.
Do you do marble floors?
Yes. Marble floor restoration is similar to counter work but scales by square footage. Common in foyers, master bathrooms, and high-end older homes. Plan to stay off the floor for 24 hours after the install.
What about marble in showers?
Marble in showers takes more abuse from water, soap, and cleaners. Restoration works but the maintenance cadence is shorter. We assess shower marble at the in-home visit and recommend whether restoration plus annual maintenance makes sense vs full replacement.
How long does the install take?
Single bathroom: typically 4 to 6 hours. Kitchen counter run: 6 to 10 hours. Floor: scales by square footage. We schedule with you so the room is back in service the same day or by the next morning at most.
